Session Length

Wanda based this marimba arrangement on mbira parts taught by Cosmas Magaya. This song has a different chord progression from the well-known Nhemamusasa. The arrangement starts with a call and response from one side of the ensemble to the other. Two sopranos and a tenor provide a trio on each side which speak back and forth. Wanda says the swirling of the song evokes for her a feeling of being "inside the head" of a mbira player during a bira (ceremony). Four sopranos enable symmetry in the arrangement; however, a slight modification allows it to be played with three sopranos. Key of G (mixolydian mode; does not use F#s). Classic singing lines, taught first, become the foundation for the marimba parts and how to hook them. The arrangement begins with a clapping and singing game which teaches the connection between the two interweaving lines. Sound file of this arrangement at: [[http://www.marimbaworks.com/WWalker/]]
